2nd Grade : Mrs. Raven
Welcome to 2nd grade! This year we will expand and build on the academic skills learned in Grade One. We will experience longer periods of academic learning while developing math skills, adding age appropriate vocabulary and reading skills, and exploring the world around us through science and social studies.
Skills Acquired During 2nd Grade
Second graders should be able to read fluently for comprehension by the end of the year. Your child's progress during this pivotal time will greatly influence how he views himself as a reader. By the end of 2nd grade, your child will be expected to:
Reading and Writing
- Read grade-specific material confidently and for fun
- Read with expression
- Read and record at least twenty age appropriate books
- Demonstrate comprehension by predicting outcomes
- Identify main ideas and supporting details
- Decode words using cues from phonics, word order, and context
- Self-select a variety of fiction and nonfiction books
- Identify subjects and predicates of sentences
- Recognize parts of speech such as noun, verb, adjective, pronoun, and adverb
- Use capitalization and punctuation correctly
- Compose in poetic, narrative, creative, and expository forms
- Write in paragraph form
- Recognize spelling patterns and spell high-frequency words correctly
- Edit and proofread their own work
- Use proper cursive handwriting
Math
- Read, write, count, and sequence numbers up to 1,000
- Identify place value to the thousands
- Represent quantities in multiple ways
- Know addition and subtraction facts to 20
- Add and subtract two and three-digit numbers
- Identify, describe, and extend repeating numeric patterns
- Use measuring tools to determine length, width, and height
- Identify and write simple fractions
- Identify and recognize two and three dimensional shapes
- Tell time in five minute intervals; be able to calculate elapsed time
- Count, add, and subtract money using dollar and cent symbols and decimal point
- Collect, sort, and interpret data in various graphs
Social Studies
- Discuss current events, communities, and community helpers
- Recognize historical figures and their contributions to society
- Understand the relationship between consumers and producers
- Read and interpret basic maps
- Appreciate diversity among cultures in the community
- Identify landforms
Science
- Identify parts of plants and explain their functions
- Name classifications of animals
- Study types of habitats
- Explore matter
Religion
- Participate in weekly prayer services and monthly masses
- Sacramental preparations, including Reconciliation and First Eucharist
- Participate in May Crowning Mass
Other Subjects
- Learn basic computer skills for word processing, conducting simple research, or playing educational games
- Develop healthy habits in Well-Being and Fitness
- Create Artwork and experiment with sounds and instruments in Music
Homework
Homework will become a regular, important aspect of your child's education in 2nd grade. Homework will usually be assigned four nights a week. Your child should be able to complete his/her homework in 20 to 30 minutes. Although students are expected to complete homework independently, parents may certainly provide occasional guidance or assistance. In addition to the assigned work, the second graders will be expected to read for 20 minutes each evening.
