Basketball:

Basketball runs from the end of October to mid-March.  It is available to both boys and girls in grades 1 through 8.

This year the student council sponsored a student-faculty basketball game that took place on Thursday, March 19th in the gym.  The students pulled off a 43-42 upset against the heavily favored faculty and coaching staff in front of a very spirited crowd.  The victory allows the students’ to hold on to the traveling trophy until the two opponents meet again for next years’ annual student-faculty basketball game.  Thank you to all the many students and families that came to show their school spirit.  Special thanks to all the many parents, faculty, and community members whom helped to make the event a success.

Congratulations...

Congratulations to both the 5th and 6th grade boys’ team and the 7th grade girls’ team for becoming the 2009 CYO basketball champions in their league.   The seventh grade girls’ team (Junior Girls C-/D+ league) defeated St. John’s 34-27 in the championship game.  They finished with a 9-3 record in conference and 13-3 overall.  The fifth and sixth grade boys’ team (biddy boys C-league) defeated St. Gregory’s 41-23 in the championship game.  They capped of their season with an impressive 9-3 conference record and went 16-5 overall.

The 7th and 8th boys’ team finished 4-6 in a very competitive junior boys’ C league.  Their overall record was 9-9 and won 4 out the last 6 games.  Some highlights include a buzzer beater victory over a top-ranked St. Gregory’s, a hard fought loss against St. Henry’s A team in the final seconds of the game, and earning the first place trophy in the Annual Holy Spirit Basketball Tournament.

The 8th grade girls  junior C team finished with an impressive 8-4 conference record and went 13-5 overall.  Highlights include winning the championship game in both the Annual Holy Spirit Basketball Tournament and the St. Augustine Basketball Tournament.  Congratulations to girls for also making the CYO Troy playoffs!

The 5th grade team finished 3-7 in the CYO Biddy D league.  Though their overall record was 3-9, this team grew tremendously over the season.  This is evident in their winning the last 2 out of 3 games.  Some highlights include a well-played victory over St. Catherine’s of Sienna at
their gym, a sweep against Averill Park, and two close hard fought losses to Sacred Heart (Schodack).

The 5th and 6th grade biddy girls D team won 8 of their 10 league games and were 10-5 overall.  Some highlights include earning the number one seed in the Troy CYO playoffs and winning the 2nd place trophy in the Annual Holy Spirit Basketball Tournament.

The 3rd & 4th grade boys made amazing progress through this past season.   Defense, passing and hustle were the keys to the season and as the season wore on, the boys played better defensively, made better passes and hustled on both ends of the floor.  The boys played well against some high quality opponents and never stopped playing hard.

3rd grade girls: This year the 3rd grade girls finished their season with a 9-4 record.  We had a team of 8 girls who really put their hearts into every game and a couple of eager 4th grade helpers when we were short on players.  We worked on the fundamentals of the game to build a strong foundation for next year.  Watch out for this team as they have a good understanding of this game and will only improve with time.  A special thank you to 7th graders Tyler S. and Zack D. for being assistant coaches!

The 4th grade girls had an awesome season. Click here for the team photo.
