Literature Grade 6:

In literature class the students will read, write, listen, and speak for
1) information and understanding
2) literary response and expression
3) critical analysis and evaluation
4) social interaction

All classes will participate in the following activities:

  • Reading novels, short stories, plays, poems, and nonfiction pieces all focused around a thematic unit of study
  • Expository, narrative, descriptive, and persuasive writing
  • Peer-revision
  • Class discussions/debates about topics related to literature
  • Group work, projects, and presentations
  • Keeping a reader’s response log while reading novels to promote critical thinking
  • Independent reading
  • Writer’s workshop


Students will be introduced to the various literary elements found in literature. They will improve their critical thinking and analytical skills by dissecting and appreciating literature. Students will also learn how to write a formal essay with a thesis statement, as well as creative pieces like short stories.

In sixth grade, the students will explore the following units:

  • Short stories (a look at literary elements)
    • “The Fun They Had” –Isaac Asimov
    • “Eleven” –Sandra Cisneros
    • “Jeremiah’s Song” –Walter Dean Myers

 

  • Friendship
    • “Greyling” – Jane Yolen
    • The View from Saturday –E.L. Konigsburg
    • “Alone” –Maya Angelou
    • A nonfiction piece about friendship
  • New Roads to Follow
    • The Cay – Theodore Taylor
    • Short stories and poems pertaining to this theme

 

  • Imagination
    • A deeper look at poetry
      1. Narrative poetry
      2. Lyric poetry
      3. Haikus and Limericks
      4. Concrete poetry
    • Literature circles
