Holy Spirit Classroom Music Program

A very important part of our program at Holy Spirit is the Christmas pagent.  Each year, the kindergarten and first grade students begin our Christmas concert with a recreation of the manger scene.  Each child dresses in costume and has a part in the play.

As the students get older, they learn how to read and notate music, how to sing songs with a great degree of difficulty pitch-wise, how to the play the Orff instruments in depth, and even a bit of music history.  The third and fourth grade classes learn to play the recorder, so each student in the class accomplishes playing a musical instrument.  And each student participates in our Christmas and Spring Concert.

For the past two years, we have put on mini-musicals as part of the Christmas concert, and this is for grades 2 through 5.  Our first one was The Nutcracker, and this past mini-musical was based on Twas the Night Before Christmas.  The students greatly enjoy putting these on for family and friends. We have a select middle school choir that sings, as well.

Grades 2 and up have the option of playing in the Holy Spirit Handbell Choir.  They learn to read rhythms and notes and to play the bells.  We are the only school in the diocese to have handbells as opposed to hand chimes.

Students in fourth grade and up can also participate in our Drama Club.  Each year a beautiful musical is performed.  This year's production is Aladdin Jr.

The music program at Holy Spirit helps to foster not only a sense of accomplishment, but also one of community.  When the students work together with their classmates towards a common goal, whether it is to create music in the classroom or to perform on stage, they develop pride in themselves, and in their classmates.
